Highball

The highball is a cocktail subcategory closely related to the long drink. The distinction is not always easy and the boundaries often become blurred in practice.

Like long drinks, highballs consist primarily of a base spirit and a (carbonated) filler such as soda or ginger ale. The proportion of spirit usually varies between 2cl and 6cl while the non-alcoholic component of the drink still predominates. Highballs are often served in characteristic highball glasses - these are tall, cylindrical drinking glasses, which are often filled with a large amount of ice cubes before filling.

In practice, the terms highball and long drink cannot really be clearly separated. Differences that are often pointed out are the comparatively smaller size of highballs (which is not exactly true for all drinks) as well as the widespread view that highballs are always served mixed together, whereas in long drinks the filler is often served separately.
