Cobbler Shaker
Three-piece cocktail shakers are also known as 'Cobbler Shakers' and are used to prepare shaken cocktails. In contrast to 2-piece and other cocktail shakers, they have a lid with an integrated sieve and a removable cap. Cobbler shakers are available in different shapes and colors, but are usually made entirely of stainless steel. In general, Cobbler shakers often have a smaller capacity than Boston shakers, but there are also rarely larger variants.
Three-piece cocktail shakers are particularly common in the home user segment and are often a great gifts idea due to their easy handling, however they are hardly ever used in bars. Ultimately, however, the choice lies with the respective staff. The built-in sieve helps filtering out seeds, and small ice cubes and can therefore make the use of an external strainer redundant. It also favors the creation of frothy cocktails. Precisely for this reason, the three-part cocktail shaker is often also of interest to professionals. Especially in Japan, where Boston shakers are not very common, Cobbler shakers are essential for techniques such as the so-called hard shake - a special shaking technique that is particularly aimed at mixing in air. The special look and aesthetics are also a common reason for using three-part cocktail shakers.
In many cases, the cap can also be used as a bar measure. However, be sure to note the different units of measurement, because some of the caps are measured in ounces, outside of the USA.
