Mixers

The term mixer is used for different products in a bar context, which can certainly cause some confusion:

(Drink) Mixer is, on the one hand, the English term for fillers – i.e. the non-alcoholic beverages used in cocktails, particularly in long drinks and highballs. When working in international teams, misunderstandings can arise due to the language barrier, where the term mixer can become a false friend.

– Drink mixers (the potential for confusion should be particularly apparent here), on the other hand, are electrically powered machines used, for example, to prepare milkshakes, frappés or smoothies. The mixing rod or spindle is driven by an overhead electric motor; depending on the model, the open metal mixing cups are either attached to the machine or placed beneath the spindle.

– Blenders are the familiar machines used for mixing or puréeing liquid, semi-solid and / or solid ingredients; they consist of a base containing an electric motor and a removable container with a motor-driven blade assembly at the bottom. Blenders are a common sight behind all kinds of bars and are used, among other things, to prepare milkshakes or slushes; some cocktail classics such as Daiquiris or Margaritas are also prepared in a blender. Thanks to their enclosed design, more powerful motors and the use of blades instead of spindles, blenders have no trouble handling ice or other solid ingredients.
