Mixing Glass (Shaker)

Mixing glasses are closely related to stirring glasses. However, while these are used exclusively for stirred cocktails, the usually thicker-walled shaker mixing glasses serve as a counterpart for Boston shakers and thus for mixing cocktails in the shaker.

Ice and cocktail ingredients are first placed in the mixing glass. The Boston Shaker is then slipped over the glass at a slight angle and fixed there with a gentle tap so that it is almost flush with one side of the glass. After shaking, the metal cup is set down and the mixing glass is released again by a gentle sideways tap with the heel of the hand. When pouring from the shaker, a Hawthorne Strainer is usually used to filter out the ice and any other small particles ('straining').

Mixing glasses for shakers differ from stirring glasses in that they lack a pouring lip. In addition, mixing glasses for shakers have thicker walls, since shaking with ice cubes could damage the glass.
