Jigger

A bar measure or 'jigger' is a measuring tool, which is used, for example, at cocktail bars to measure the amount of liquid ingredients from bottles.

The bar measure got its name 'jigger' from the common term ‘jigger’ which was used in the 19th century USA for a liquid quantity of 1.5 oz (≈ 44 ml).

Jiggers are mostly made of metal, but models made of plastic or, more rarely, glass are not uncommon. Often, jiggers also have two cups, each with a different volume. Various versions are available in different combinations of sizes - in European countries the 4/2 cl variant is common, in other regions other capacities such as 50/20 (GB) or 30/15 (Australia) are used. In addition, jiggers from the USA, for example, are available in the unit ounce, e.g. in the common combinations 1.5/1 oz. (≈ 44/30 ml) or 1.5/0.75 oz. (≈ 44/22 ml).

Sometimes jiggers are also provided with a scale on the inside or outside, with which smaller amounts can also be dosed precisely.
